There are several secrets to making a great post-workout drink like this. It all starts with the cocoa. Real cocoa powder is the only way to go. I like raw powders like the Navitas Naturals brand. Regardless of which brand you choose, make sure you get a quality unsweetened cocoa powder. You can add your own sugar substitute (I like Truvia and Splenda is okay … stay away from the other ones, which have been linked to cancer in large doses in animal studies).
The other ingredients in this chocolate protein shake are milk (I prefer 2%), banana, and protein. I used to only use whey protein powder but I’ve since switched to vegetable-based protein powder, like Now Foods Pea Protein.
Nutritionally-speaking, you get a great balance of carbs, protein, and fat that’s perfect for after a hard workout. This shake does have 430 calories, so it can also serve as a good meal replacement. And, real cocoa powder has a lot of health benefits. It’s particularly high in antioxidants and fiber.
