Coleslaw is a barbecue/tailgate staple in my world. Problem is, most coleslaw is jam-packed with unhealthy stuff–a.k.a, lots of calories, salt, and fat. This healthy broccoli slaw recipe is different. And by “different,” I mean you can save yourself serious calories while still getting a great-tasting coleslaw.
The secret is a delicious sauce consisting of reduced fat buttermilk, mayonnaise with olive oil, and avocado. It’s so smooth and creamy you won’t know it’s healthier.

Ingredients: healthy coleslaw recipe
- 2 cups broccoli slaw
- 1/2 cup reduced fat buttermilk
- 2 T mayo with olive oil
- 1 avocado
- 1 wedge Laughing Cow light Swiss cheese
- 1/2 cup salt-free black beans
- 1 lime
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- 1 green onion
- 1/2 jalapeno
- Black pepper to taste
Combine half the avocado, mayo, buttermilk, and Laughing Cow cheese wedge in a bowl. Mash together thoroughly. Squirt the juice from half the lime over the remaining avocado to prevent it from browning. Dice the green onion and jalapeno and set aside. Add the broccoli slaw, beans, juice from half a lime, salt, green onion, and jalapeno. Thinly slice up the remaining half of the avocado. Top broccoli slaw with avocado slices and black pepper.
