Ubuntu Wiki to be re-licensed to CC BY-SA Inbox X
Linux, Tech February 16th, 2011
This morning I received this email saying that Ubuntu Wiki content now is listed as copyright Canonical, to the CC-BY-SA license.

- Image: creativecommons
The CC-BY-SA means you are free to:
to Share — to copy, distribute and transmit the work
to Remix — to adapt the work
Under the following conditions:
Attribution — You must attribute the work in the manner specified by the author or licensor (but not in any way that suggests that they endorse you or your use of the work).
Share Alike — If you alter, transform, or build upon this work, you may distribute the resulting work only under the same or similar license to this one.
To me, free culture license is totally a new term =^0^=
————————————————–
Dear Contributor to the Ubuntu Wiki,
We are contacting you because you have contributed content to the Ubuntu wiki at http://wiki.ubuntu.com.
The license of content of the Ubuntu Wiki has always been publically listed as copyright Canonical Ltd. Working with the Ubuntu Community Council, Canonical has decided to transition the content in the Ubuntu Wiki to the the CC-BY-SA license[1]. This license is a free culture license[2] and is the same license used both by the Ubuntu Documentation wiki [3] since 2007 [4] and by Wikipedia.
If you are happy with the idea of this transition for the content you have provided, you do not need to do anything. If you have problems or issues, please read the feedback section below and contact us.
The rest of this message provides a rationale, details, and information on providing feedback.
= Decision =
After discussion among the Ubuntu Community Council, it has been decided that the material on the Ubuntu wiki should be licensed under a free license, CC-by-SA[1]. The Ubuntu wiki will be changed to make this clear to those creating or editing pages, and of course external links from the Wiki to material under other licences will continue to be welcome.
This decision is not intended in any way to underestimate the value of contributions, but rather to ensure that the material on the wiki complies with the same standards of openness as the Ubuntu project as a whole.
= Rationale =
The Ubuntu wiki is a collaborative resource, and the product of the Ubuntu community as a whole. Its content, put together by many contributors with different knowledge and points of view, is immensely valuable to us all. Unfortunately, at the moment, there is no clear definition of what rights contributors to the content retain over the material that they post, or the extent to which other persons are entitled to copy or modify the material. For example, it would be very useful to ensure that community contributed content may be shared by many teams without complex licensing issues, ensuring that those working on content can concentrate on producing the best information possible rather than legal negotiations.
Furthermore, consistent with Ubuntu’s philosophy, it is important that material created for use on the Ubuntu wiki be available for other communities outside ours to benefit from. Using an open license on the Ubuntu wiki allows other communities to re-use material which may be useful to them under terms which are widely recognised in the free software community.
= Feedback =
We would again like to make a good-faith attempt to ensure that contributors of existing material are happy with this change. We invite any contributors who have any questions or concerns about this plan to contact us at <community-council@lists.ubuntu.com>. Given that the re-licensing of http://help.ubuntu.com/community was fairly uncontroversial and since the aim to re-license the Ubuntu wiki at some point later has not brought up any objections, we hope that contributors will welcome it.
In the absence of a substantial number of objections, this change will be made to the Ubuntu wiki after approximately one month.
More details can be found here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WikiLicensing
Many thanks for your contributions to the Ubuntu Wiki, and we hope that you will continue to help!
= Exceptions =
If you want to license a code snippet on the wiki under another open source license [5], please specify the relevant license in the snippet itself. In the event that no license is specified, the license applicable to the code snippet would be the same as that applicable to any other material on the wiki.

How to convert pdf file to html for Kindle online for free
Tech February 15th, 2011
Kindle 3 supported reading pdf, but it is not displayed so well as Kindle native format. In addition, it can not speak out the pdf file.
After finding and testing around the Net I found out this very nice free service that helps us to convert pdf to html for free. Firstly, all we need to attach all files we would like to convert and email to: convert@pdf2mobile.com . They will convert your files to HTML and attach to reply email for you.
Latter on, simply forward that email to you @kindle email, and let Amazon converts them to a better format for Kindle. Then just simply download them to your Kindle.
That’s it!

Kindle Tips & Tricks
Tech February 13th, 2011
A couple days ago I got an Amazon Kindle as a gift for reading eBook.
Wow it is really useful for me because I personally have a lot of good ebooks that I need to read.
Reading them on my computer makes my eyes tired very quickly and it cost much energy for running a computer just for reading books purpose.
Another option is that I could print them all out, but it will also cost a lot of… money. And one more thing is that it is not so convenient for carrying a lot of book with you when you go here and there.
Now with the AK you can carry your portable library very easily in your small bag

Hehe so here I would like to share some beautiful tips and tricks for Kindle that I found on the Net, wow they are cool!
Enjoy reading!

Kindle Tips & Tricks
Here’s a list of tips, tricks, and hacks for the Amazon Kindle that I’ve uncovered. Some of these are valid for the original Kindle and some are valid for the Kindle 2 and Kindle DX.
Keyboard Shortcuts
- Alt+Shift+M – Start a game of Minesweeper. While in the game you can press G for a version of “Go”
- Alt-T – Shows time (only on the original Kindle; does not work on the Kindle 2 or Kindle DX…booo!)
- Alt-Shift-o – In picture viewer, set the current picture as the screensaver
- Alt-Shift-G – Take a screenshot of the currently displayed screen. A .GIF file will be created in the \documents folder (plug the device in to your computer to access).
- Hold the power slider for 5 seconds – Reset (Kindle 2 and Kindle DX only).
Storing & Viewing Pictures
The Picture Viewer on the Kindle 2 and Kindle DX is disabled by default and you enable it by creating the \pictures folder on the device. After you’ve created a sub-directory (you can’t put photos in the root of \pictures!) press Alt-A to tell the device to refresh the listing.
To copy pictures to your Kindle 2 or Kindle DX and be able to view them, connect your device via USB and create a directory named “pictures” in the root of the mounted drive. Create sub-directories with your pictures in that folder and each sub-directory will show up as a “book” on your home page on the device.
The Picture Viewer is really slow and clunky which explains why it’s a hidden feature…
I found a tool called Mangle that will reformat pictures to the right size (600×800 for the Kindle 2 and 825×1200 fore the Kindle DX) as well as convert them to grayscale. This makes loading them quicker and they take up less space on the device. Mangle is designed for people who like to read Manga (I’m not a fan personally) but works well enough for just converting pictures.
Calculator
In the search box enter simple math formulas (e.g. 2+2) and it will show you the result of the calculation in the search results. It supports basic math & trig functions and you can use parenthesis for grouping.
Displaying the Time
On the original Kindle you could display the time by pressing Alt-T. This no longer works on the Kindle 2 or Kindle DX which really bums me out. However, I did discovered that you can enter “@time” as a search (see below) and it will display the date & time in a popup.
Search
In any search box you can prefix your search phrase with “@” commands. To enter that @ character on the 2 and DX you need to type some other character first to get the search box to come up and then backspace over it, then use the SYM key to bring up the symbol menu.
- @help (searches help)
- @web (searches the web using Google…boo! It should use Bing!)
- @wiki (searches wikipedia)
- @store (searches the Kindle store)
- @time (shows the time)
Run Diagnostics
While in settings:
Type 411 to show diagnostics information.
Type 611 for even more diagnostics (something called a diagnostic data service call)

Owl – do good get good
Life, Photos January 10th, 2011
Here is the owl (Strix occidentalis caurina) I got recently. I named him Kappi.
He’s quite cute and lovely. In the daytime, he just stands on his favourite places and sleep, not moving here and there like the evening time.

In Vietnam, people think that these birds bring unlucky or bad things to human.BUT, on the other hand, in the U.S it is the symbol of knowledge. And in Japan and Myanmar, some friends told me that they can bring lucky to the owner.
For me, it is clear that all of these things are just human concepts. The natural rule is that if you do good things, then you will get good results. That’s it!
May all of you be always successful and be able to do a lot of good things in next new years 2011 and…!
