how to prolong your laptop battery
Linux, Tech December 26th, 2009
Battery life is a common topic for laptop users. I have read many many posts about how to prolong a laptop battery life. Here are most popular tips that I know.
0 – If you want to use your A.C./D.C power (use power directly from a charger) you may consider these steps:
- Charge your battery full 100%
- Unplug charger
- Use battery power until I has about 45-50% life left.
- Turn off your laptop (certainly) and remove your battery (and pls keep the placeholder of the batter clean + dry
) - Place the battery in a cool place.
- Use your A.C/D.C power
Someone said that “Never remove a fully charged battery from laptop for a period over well about 1 month, because your battery will not be able to be charged again”. I have not test this tip yet, so I am not sure it is true or not.
1 – Keep your battery working in a cool place (at least < 30*C) (Li-on battery is also a chemical battery, it reacts to heat).
2 – Do not charge your batter until the battery has just 5-10% life left.
3- Turn off unnecessary functions as much as you can (blue-tooth, wifi… when you don’t use them)
4 – Using Linux OS (advanced config).
Most of these tips come from my favorite post: http://www.trap17.com/index.php/Pro-long-Laptop-Battery-Life_t64414.html

English jokes – Computer tech support
Life, Linux November 12th, 2009
Dear Tech Support:
Last year I upgraded from Girlfriend 7.0 to Wife 1.0. I soon noticed that the new program began unexpected child processing that took up a lot of space and valuable resources. In addition, Wife 1.0 installed itself into all other programs and now monitors all other system>activity. Applications such as Poker Night 10.3, Football 5.0, Hunting and Fishing 7.5, and Racing 3.6 no longer run, crashing the system whenever selected.
I can’t seem to keep Wife 1.0 in the background while attempting to run my favorite applications. I’m thinking about going back to Girlfriend 7.0, but the uninstall doesn’t work on Wife 1.0. Please help!
Thanks,
A Troubled User.
———-REPLY———-
Dear Troubled User:
This is a very common problem that men complain about.
Many people upgrade from Girlfriend 7.0 to Wife 1.0, thinking that it is just a Utilities and Entertainment program. Wife 1.0 is an OPERATING SYSTEM and is designed by its Creator to run EVERYTHING!!! It is also impossible to delete Wife 1.0 and to return to Girlfriend 7.0. It is impossible to uninstall, or purge the program files from the system once installed.
You cannot go back to Girlfriend 7.0 because Wife 1.0 is designed to not allow this. Look in your Wife 1.0 manual under Warnings-Alimony-Child Support. I recommend that you keep Wife1.0 and work on improving the situation. I suggest installing the background application “Yes Dear” to alleviate software augmentation.
The best course of action is to enter the command C:\APOLOGIZE because ultimately you will have to give the APOLOGIZE command before the system will return to normal anyway.
Wife 1.0 is a great program, but it tends to be very high maintenance. Wife 1.0 comes with several support programs, such as Clean and Sweep 3.0, Cook It 1.5 and Do Bills 4.2. However, be very careful how you use these programs. Improper use will cause the system to launch the program Nag, Nag 9.5. Once this happens, the only way to improve the performance of Wife 1.0 is to purchase additional software. I recommend Flowers 2.1 and Diamonds 5.0! WARNING!!! DO NOT, under any circumstances, install Secretary With Short Skirt 3.3. This application is not supported by Wife 1.0 and will cause irreversible damage to the operating system.
Best of luck,
Tech Support

Shiretoko Mozilla Firefox for Ubuntu Canonical – a world natural heritage site and the Firefox
Life, Linux, Tech November 7th, 2009
Today I just recognise there was a Mozilla Firefox for Ubuntu Canonical inside my Ubuntu. Wow there were some nice stories about a world natural heritage site and the Firefox web browser.
Discovery about Shiretoko:

I have a question, if a famous browser like FF will be named as your home city, or even your name @@, how will you feel at that time?
Solving Power-on password, non system disk or disk error
Linux, Tech October 27th, 2009
My friend gave me a notebook having Power-on password issue. And this post is telling about how I solved this problem. If you are looking for reference, you do not need to read the whole post, just jump to Issues and fixing.
1- Disassembling a notebook:
This is the very first time I disassemble a notebook! Oh my Dad! It must be harder than disassembling a desktop PC 3 times or much more. Many small devices really need your carefulness and patience.
2- Finding and fixing problems:
It took me around 17 hours (hic hic if the owner told me that the DVD-ROOM was DEAD already, it would save me up to 10 hours *^&%%$#$&%*&$&$&$.) to solve the problems: the notebook could not boot due to “Bios password issue” “power-on password” and “non system disk or disk error”.
The pity is that I did not know that all the problem had been solved at the first day. I did not know that the CD-ROOM was DEAD already, even I could see it in the bios. So I just thought that there was something wrong left with the bios, or the main board, or the HDD. So both of us (the notebook and me) worked for nearly whole night! And this workaround took me more than 10 holly stupid hours for searching, reading, disassembling, reassempling, checking…
Then I tried with a bootable usb which has got hiren’s boot files 10.0 inside. And it worked. And I could run some tools to format the HDD, set active partition… Finally, I thought that it must be having something wrong with the DVD-ROM. I made a call to the owner… the owner: “I am sorry, I forgot to tell you that the DVD-ROM was dead”… ^*&^%$#@@#$%^^
3 – Issues and fixing
I have tried all of the follow methods. And they worked well for me.
Power-on password: try removing the real-time clock (RTC) battery (you should read maintenance and service guide from manufacturer).
Non system disk or disk error: first try removing the all bootable devices, including USB, bootable DVD…, then check your HDD, DVD-ROM. If no luck, try a BOOTABLE USB like my situation. If all of the above method don’t work, you may try updating your BIOS, buy a new RTC battery.
(I did both, using bootable usb, update bios, and buy a new RTC battery).
Good luck!

How to run Opera Mini on Ubuntu
Linux, Tech May 24th, 2009
This is a “copy and paste” post from Source.
I love Opera Mini browser, it is the best way to browse internet on your cellphone. I had found a tutorial which showed how to use Opera Mini on Windows. I tried to run Opera Mini on Ubuntu. It has been a lifesaver. Thanks to the heavy compression done by Opera Mini servers pages load within one second. This makes Opera Mini very useful for those on slow internet connection. When my internet speed dips, say when I am downloading softwares etc I use Opera Mini. I love Opera Mini on Ubuntu.
So here is how you can run Opera Mini on your Ubuntu (or any other Linux distro):
Downloading and installing the software you need:
- go to http://microemu.org/
- download the latest release (you can pick the snapshot as well, doesn’t really matter)
- unzip the archive on your PC
- Download the Opera Mini .jar and .jad files from operamini.com
- Install Java. Go to Applications > Add/ Remove and now type java in the search box. You will find two packages OpenJDK Java Runtime and OpenJDK Java 6 Webstart. Click on them and install them by clicking on Apply Changes. It will take some time as these packages are about 30 MB in size.
Starting and configuring the software:
- Navigate to the folder where you have extracted the microemulator file. Now locate the file ‘microemulator.jar’, right click it and select ‘Open With’ tab now click on the Add button, a new window will pop out clcik on ‘Use a Custom Command’ now paste this thing in it: /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/bin/java -jar . Double-click “microemulator.jar” to run it.
- go to “Options > Select device”, click “Add…”, navigate to “microemulator\devices” and select “microemu-device-resizable.jar”
- select the “Resizable device” profile you just added and click “Set as default”
- click the “Resize” button in lower right to set the size you want
- go to “File > Open JAD” and choose the Opera Mini jad you previously downloaded
- “Opera Mini” now appears in the list of apps you can start, click the “Start” button to launch it
Create a Shortcut in Applications Menu
1. Go to System > Preferences > Main Menu
Navigate to Internet submenu and clcik on ‘New Item’. Here fill in the proper details like this:
Type: Application
Name: Opera Mini
Command: This is very important!!!
First copy this in the box:
/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/bin/java -jar
Now navigate to the folder where you have extracted the microemulator.jar and right click on it. Select Properties. In the Basic tab you will find location, copy it and then paste it after the above given command in the box like this:
there should be one space between the two commands.
